Pete's Hydrangeas

2008 Symposium

The Alabama Hydrangea Society is sponsoring its annual Hydrangea Symposium on Friday, June 13 at Aldridge Gardens. Though hydrangeas are highlighted plants, all gardeners will enjoy this informative event which features three fantastic garden authorities.

Steve Bender, a well-known writer with Southern Living, will describe some of his plants that can take hot and dry conditions, many of which would make excellent hydrangea companions. He will also suggest hydrangeas that can take full sun and low levels of water while blooming prolifically.

Sandra Jonas, a Georgia-based landscape designer, will emphasize her work done at Penny McHenry's garden in Atlanta and will discuss gardens she photographed in France and Italy that contain outstanding hydrangeas.

And Jim Scott, whose Lake Martin estate has been on HGTV's A Gardener's Diary, will share photos and stories that document the creation of his spectacular garden.

An all day ticket (8:45 am-2:00 pm) is $60 and includes gourmet boxed lunch and docent-guided tours of hydrangea collection. Hydrangeas and companions will be for sale. Limited seating. For information call 663-7700 or email gardenerjan@bellsouth.net.
